The blockade worked by cutting off all supplies to the people inside. German and Finnish armies moved to surround the city from the north and south. On September 8, 1941, they cut the last land routes to the city. Instead of trying to capture the city, the German army chose to starve the people. They also used bombs to attack the city. This plan was meant to force the city to surrender through hunger and cold.

German forces under Field Marshal Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb led the attack. The siege was not fully broken until January 27, 1944. During the hard winters, people had to find ways to get food. They used ships on Lake Ladoga to bring supplies. They also used a frozen highway on the lake called the Road of Life.

Before the war, the city had about 3.2 million people living in it. During the siege, an estimated 1.5 million people died. About 900,000 of those deaths were caused by hunger and cold. Some historians call this a genocide. They say the destruction of the city was done on purpose.
