He was a master of the clarinet and the saxophone. He was also an important composer. Bechet was one of the first major soloists in the history of jazz. This means he was a leader when performing alone. He actually made recordings several months before the famous trumpeter Louis Armstrong. His musical style was known for being emotional and all-encompassing.

Even though he was a professional, he never learned how to read music. He relied on his ears and his deep understanding of melody.

Bechet grew up in a house filled with music in New Orleans.

He was born in 1897 to a middle-class Creole of color family. His father, Omar, was a shoemaker and a flute player. All four of Bechet's brothers were also musicians. One brother, Leonard Victor Bechet, was a dentist who also played the trombone. Sidney began his musical journey on the cornet. He eventually mastered the clarinet, which he played almost exclusively until 1919. He even performed in public at age six during a family birthday party.

As he grew, Bechet developed a unique way of playing.

He used improvisational techniques like obbligatos, which are melodic flourishes. He used scales and arpeggios to vary the main melody. While working with Louis Armstrong, he helped develop the Swing style of jazz. This style helped create a clear difference between jazz and ragtime. Bechet liked a sound that dominated a performance. His tone was often described as reckless and powerful. He frequently used a broad vibrato, which is a slight shaking of the note. This technique was similar to what New Orleans clarinetists used at the time.

In 1919, Bechet made a discovery that changed his career. While in London, he found the straight soprano saxophone.

Before this, he had focused on the clarinet. Bechet became the first influential soprano saxophonist in jazz. This helped the instrument become much more popular in the genre. His talent caught the attention of experts. In 1919, a Swiss conductor named Ernest Ansermet wrote a tribute to him. This was one of the first times a classical music expert wrote about a jazz musician. Ansermet even linked Bechet's music to the works of Bach.

Bechet's professional life took him across the globe.

In 1924, he worked with the legendary Duke Ellington for three months. Ellington was so impressed that he called Bechet "the epitome of jazz." In 1925, Bechet sailed to Europe with the Revue Nègre. This group included the famous Josephine Baker. He toured Europe and reached as far as Russia by 1926. He lived in Paris and led a band at Chez Bricktop. However, his life was not always easy. He was once imprisoned in Paris for eleven months. He also faced financial struggles in the United States during the late 1920s and 1930s.

In the 1940s, Bechet experimented with new recording methods.

In 1941, he participated in an early experiment called overdubbing. During this session, he recorded "The Sheik of Araby" by playing six different instruments. He played the clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, piano, bass, and drums. He later explained that he got mixed up while playing the rhythm instruments. By 1951, Bechet moved to France permanently. He found that he could find well-paid work there more easily than in the United States. He married Elisabeth Ziegler in Antibes that same year.

Bechet left a massive legacy that continues today.

His music has been featured in about 60 different films. He even inspired a character in the novel Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse. In France, a park called Sidney Bechet Square honors him in Antibes. A monument there features a bust of his face. His influence even reaches outer space, as a crater on the planet Mercury is named after him. Bechet died of lung cancer on May 14, 1959. He was 62 years old on the day of his death. His music remains a vital part of the jazz tradition.
