The name Sichuan has an interesting history. Many people think it means "four rivers." They often point to the Jialing, Jinsha, Wu, Min, and Tuo rivers. However, the historian Tan Qixiang says this is an error. The name is actually a contraction of two phrases. These are "Four Plain Circuits" and "Four Circuits of Chuanxia." In this context, the word "chuan" means "plain" rather than "river." Historically, the area was also known as Ba–Shu. This name referred to the ancient states of Ba and Shu. Today, both "Shu" and "Chuan" are used as abbreviations for the province.
Ancient civilizations thrived in this area long ago. The Baodun culture existed in the Chengdu Plain around 2700 to 1750 BC. The most important native states were Ba and Shu. Ba stretched from the Han Valley down the Jialing River. Shu occupied the Min River valley and included Chengdu.

Powerful states eventually took control of the region. The Qin dynasty conquered the kingdoms of Shu and Ba by 316 BC. The Qin saw the military and agricultural value of the basin. They used the area as a staging ground for armies.
Sichuan has seen many political shifts through the centuries. During the Tang dynasty, the region regained great importance. The famous poet Du Fu lived here during this time. In 1023 AD, Chengdu issued the first true paper money in human history.
The 20th century brought both hardship and change. During World War II, Chongqing served as the temporary capital of the Republic of China.
Today, Sichuan is a vital economic and cultural hub. It is the largest economy in western China.
