The river travels through rocky valleys and deep gorges. In some places, the valley is wide and flat. Here, people grow fruit like apples and walnuts.

The river has a very interesting path. It starts at the Rimo Glacier in the eastern Karakoram. From there, it flows south-southeast for a while. Then, it makes a huge V-shaped bend. After this bend, it flows northwest. 
People have different ideas about why the river has its name. In 1854, Alexander Cunningham said it came from a local village. In 1977, Friedrich A. Peter suggested a different idea. He thought it was a misspelling of a Tibetan name. He believed it meant "gravel spreader." This describes how the river moves lots of gravel during floods. 
History shows that this river valley has always been important. In the 1800s, British survey teams mapped the area. They wanted to understand the remote mountain frontiers. The valley was also a famous trade route. Caravans used these paths to travel between Central Asia and India. 
Today, the Shyok Valley is a place for travelers to explore. Many people visit to see the Nubra Valley nearby. You can find sand dunes and ride Bactrian camels near Hundar. There is also a famous place called the Diskit Monastery.

The river's water comes from specific natural processes. About 49 percent of its flow comes from glacier melt. Another 39 percent comes from snowmelt, which is often called nival flow. Only 12 percent of the water comes from rainfall. Because of this, the river follows a glacial and nival discharge regime. This means the water levels change with the seasons. The flow peaks during the summer melt season. It reaches a low point, or a trough, during the winter. At the Yugo gauging station, the mean discharge was 152 cubic meters per second between 1983 and 2015. During this time, the flow varied from a minimum of 11 to a maximum of 413 cubic meters per second.
The Shyok River follows a complex and winding path. It begins at the snout of the Rimo Glacier in the eastern Karakoram. The source sits at an elevation of about 5,000 meters. At first, the river flows in a south-southeast direction. It travels between the Rimo Muztagh and Saser Muztagh ranges. About midway through this section, it receives the Galwan River. Shortly after, the Chang Chenmo River joins it. At the Chang Chenmo Range, the river makes a major V-shaped bend. This bend causes the river to reverse direction toward the northwest. 
After the V-shaped bend, the river's character changes. The valley widens, and the river becomes braided. A braided river consists of many small channels that weave in and out. Near the village of Diskit, the Nubra River joins the Shyok. From this point, the river flows west-northwest between the Saltoro and Ladakh ranges. The valley eventually narrows into a rocky gorge near the hamlet of Yagulung. The river then crosses the border from India into Pakistan. It becomes braided once more before it meets the Hushe River near Khaplu. Finally, the Shyok flows west to join the Indus River near the village of Keris. 
Researchers have several theories about the name "Shyok." In 1854, Alexander Cunningham suggested it came from the Shyok village. In 1977, Friedrich A. Peter proposed a different Tibetan origin. He believed it was a misspelling of "Shayog." This name combines "shag," meaning gravel, and "gyog," meaning to spread. Therefore, it could mean "gravel spreader" due to the river's many floods. In 1992, Harish Kapadia offered a third idea. He believed the name was Yarkandi, a Turkic dialect. He interpreted it as "river of death" because of its dangerous floods.
The geology of the Shyok Valley is very significant. The river flows through the Shyok Suture Zone. This is a complex area of rock known as an ophiolitic mélange. This zone represents an old back-arc basin from the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods. It sits between the Kohistan–Ladakh arc and the Karakoram terrane. The region is also shaped by the active Karakoram fault system. This fault bisects the valley and affects many types of rocks. The valley itself is carved into the Karakoram mountains. It features rocky gorges and wide, semiarid valleys. 
History and modern use show how important this river is. In the 19th century, British survey teams mapped the area. These expeditions helped create modern maps of the western Himalaya. The valley also served as a historic trade route. Caravans used the river's path to travel between Central Asia and India. In recent years, the area has gained strategic importance near contested borders. The Darbuk–Shyok–Daulat Beg Oldi road was built along the banks. This road helps with military logistics near the Siachen Glacier. 
Today, the Shyok Valley is also a place for tourism and life. The valley provides access to the popular Nubra Valley. Visitors go to the village of Hundar to see sand dunes and ride Bactrian camels. People can also visit the Diskit Monastery. In the lower parts of the valley, the river supports agriculture. Seasonal meltwaters irrigate orchards where people grow apricots, walnuts, and apples. During the cold winter months, the river often freezes solid. This creates a natural passage between the Nubra Valley and Khaplu.
