The ice melts and turns into water. This water flows into the Nubra River.

Many soldiers live on the ice. It is a very cold place. The weather can be very harsh.

The ice is melting faster now. This happens because the air is getting warmer.

It is a very special and busy place in the mountains.

It sits in the Karakoram mountains. It is part of the high Himalayas. This glacier is the longest in the Karakoram range. It is also the second longest glacier in non-polar areas.

The melting ice makes the Nubra River. This river flows into the Shyok River. That river eventually joins the Indus River.

The name Siachen comes from local words. It means a land with many roses.

The area is very cold and remote. It is also a place where many soldiers live. India and Pakistan both have troops there. This makes it the highest battleground on Earth.

The glacier is changing today. It is melting at a fast rate. Scientists say it has shrunk by 35 percent. The melting happens because the air is getting warmer. The presence of many soldiers also causes problems. Waste and chemicals can hurt the land and the water. Rare animals like the snow leopard live nearby. We must learn how to protect these special places.

This glacier is the longest in the Karakoram Mountains. It is also the second longest glacier in the world outside of the North and South Poles. The glacier starts at a very high point called Indira Col. This point is on the border between India and China. From there, the ice flows down to a lower point called its terminus.

Nature works in many ways at the glacier. The melting ice from Siachen creates the Nubra River. This river flows into the Shyok River. Eventually, the Shyok joins the huge Indus River.

The Indus River is 3,000 kilometers long. It flows through Pakistan and helps water many farms. The glacier is part of a place called the "Third Pole." This area has a lot of ice and snow. It sits near a great divide between two large pieces of Earth called plates.

People have studied this place for a long time. In June 1958, the Geological Survey of India went there on an expedition. They looked at five different glaciers in the region. The name Siachen might come from the Balti language. In that language, "Sia" means a plant from the rose family. "Chen" means something that is found in large amounts. So, the name means a land with many roses.

Today, the glacier is a very busy place for soldiers. India and Pakistan both claim the land. India has managed the area since 1984 after an operation called Meghdoot.

Because of this, it is known as the highest battleground on Earth. The weather there is very harsh and dangerous. More soldiers have died from the cold and bad weather than from fighting. Temperatures can drop very low, and winter snow can be over 35 feet deep.

The glacier is also facing big changes. Scientists say the ice is melting and retreating quickly. One study showed the glacier had shrunk by about 35 percent. The melting might be caused by warmer air or chemicals used by people. There is also a lot of waste left behind by the many troops. This waste includes plastic and metal. Scientists are trying to find ways to clean the area and protect animals like the snow leopard.

The Siachen Glacier is a massive river of ice located in the eastern Karakoram range of the Himalayas. It sits just northeast of the point NJ9842, where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends.

This glacier is a significant feature of the Earth's geography. It is the longest glacier in the Karakoram Mountains. It is also the second-longest glacier in the world's non-polar areas. The glacier's name may come from the Balti language. In Balti, "Sia" refers to a plant in the rose family. "Chen" means an object found in abundance. Therefore, Siachen means a land with an abundance of roses.

The glacier follows a steep path through the mountains. Its head is located at Indira Col on the India–China border. At this point, the altitude is 5,753 meters above sea level. The glacier flows down to its terminus at an altitude of 3,620 meters.

The glacier sits between the main Karakoram range to the east and the Saltoro Ridge to the west. The Saltoro Ridge is a high mountain crest. Its altitudes range from 5,450 to 7,720 meters. Several major passes exist on this ridge. These include Sia La, Bilafond La, and Gyong La.

The Siachen Glacier is a vital part of a larger water system. The melting ice from the glacier serves as the main source for the Nubra River. This river eventually joins the Shyok River.

The Shyok River then flows into the Indus River. The Indus is a massive river that is 3,000 kilometers long. It flows through Pakistan and feeds the largest irrigation system in the world. Because of this, the glacier is part of the "Third Pole." This term describes the extensively glaciated portions of the Karakoram. The glacier sits just south of the great drainage divide. This divide separates the Eurasian Plate from the Indian subcontinent.

History shows that the Siachen region has become a site of intense conflict. In June 1958, the Geological Survey of India led an expedition to the area. They studied five glaciers, including the Siachen. In 1984, India launched Operation Meghdoot. This military operation gave India control over the glacier and its tributaries. Since then, the region has been known as the highest battleground on Earth. India and Pakistan both maintain military presences in the area. Both countries have thousands of troops stationed nearby. Efforts to demilitarize the region have not yet succeeded.

The environment in this region is extremely harsh. Winter snowfall can exceed 1,000 centimeters. Temperatures can drop to very low levels. These conditions make life difficult for the soldiers stationed there. In fact, more soldiers have died from weather than from combat. Between 1984 and 2016, over 900 Indian personnel died due to climatic and environmental factors. Pakistan has also lost many soldiers to the environment. For example, 140 Pakistanis died in the 2012 Gayari Sector avalanche. The region remains unpopulated by civilians. The nearest settlement is the village of Warshi.

Today, the glacier is facing serious environmental challenges. Scientists have observed that the glacier is retreating at an alarming rate. A 2007 study showed the glacier was retreating by about 110 meters every year. The total size of the glacier has decreased by almost 35 percent. It is predicted the glacier could be reduced to one-fifth of its 2011 size by 2035. Some scientists believe chemical blasting used to build camps causes this melting. Additionally, the presence of thousands of troops introduces pollution. Waste is often dumped into glacial crevasses. About 40 percent of this waste is plastic and metal. This can affect the water in the Shyok and Indus rivers.

Researchers are working to address these ecological issues. Some scientists are trying to find ways to dispose of garbage using scientific methods. Others are working to develop a bacterium that can decompose waste in extreme weather. Protecting the ecosystem is important for rare species in the area. Animals like the snow leopard, brown bear, and ibex live in this region. The military presence and pollution pose risks to these animals. Maintaining the health of the glacier is essential for the water systems that millions of people rely on for drinking and farming.
