When Fulin's father, Hong Taiji, died, Fulin was only five years old. A group of Manchu princes met to choose a new leader. They chose the young boy to be the next emperor. Because he was so small, they picked two men to help him. These men were called regents. One was a prince named Dorgon. The other was a man named Jirgalang.

Dorgon held most of the power for many years.

From 1643 to 1650, Dorgon led the way for the Qing. He helped the Qing armies take over much of the land once held by the Ming dynasty. In November 1644, the young emperor was officially placed on the throne in Beijing. Dorgon even made a rule about hair in 1645. This rule forced men to shave their foreheads and wear a long braid called a queue. This was a hard rule for many people to follow.

After Dorgon died in 1650, the Shunzhi Emperor began to rule on his own.

He wanted to make the government better. He tried to stop leaders from being corrupt, which means taking things that do not belong to them. He also tried to limit the power of the Manchu nobles. During the 1650s, he had to fight against groups who still wanted the old Ming dynasty to rule. By 1661, his armies had finally defeated his last major enemies. These leaders were known as Koxinga and the Prince of Gui.

Even though he was a strong leader, his life ended quite early.

His personal name was Fulin. He was the second emperor of the Qing. He was also the first Qing emperor to rule over China proper. This transition marked a major shift in Chinese history. The Qing were Manchus from the north. They replaced the Ming dynasty as the rulers of the land. His reign was a period of intense conquest and political change.

Fulin's rise to power happened during a time of great uncertainty.

His father, Hong Taiji, died in 1643. At that time, Fulin was only five years old. A committee of Manchu princes met to choose a successor. They chose the young Fulin to be the new emperor. However, a child could not rule alone. The council appointed two co-regents to assist him. These were Dorgon and Jirgalang. Both men were members of the Aisin-Gioro clan.

During the early years, Dorgon held almost all political power.

From 1643 to 1650, Dorgon acted as the primary leader. He was a proven military leader. Under his guidance, the Qing forces expanded their territory. They conquered most of the land held by the fallen Ming dynasty. In November 1644, the Shunzhi Emperor was officially enthroned in Beijing. This move established the basis for Qing rule over China proper. Dorgon even managed the military and the government with great control.

Conquering a new land requires strict rules and discipline.

In 1645, Dorgon issued the "hair cutting command." This policy forced all male subjects to shave their foreheads. They also had to braid their remaining hair into a queue. This hairstyle resembled that of the Manchus. The policy was very unpopular among the people. In fact, peasant rebellions erupted around Beijing because of it. Dorgon had to repeal the command just a few weeks later.

After Dorgon died on the last day of 1650, things changed. The Shunzhi Emperor finally began to rule personally.

He wanted to reform the way the empire worked. He attempted to fight corruption within the government. He also tried to reduce the political influence of the Manchu nobility. These efforts met with mixed success. During the 1650s, he faced many challenges. Ming loyalist groups rose up to resist Qing rule. The emperor had to use his armies to maintain control.

By 1661, the Qing military had achieved major victories. They defeated the last of the significant Ming resistance. These enemies included Koxinga and the Prince of Gui. Both of these leaders would die the following year. However, the emperor's own life was cut short.

In February 1661, the Shunzhi Emperor died at age 22. He died from smallpox. This was an endemic disease in China. The Manchus had no natural immunity to this specific virus. His death marked the end of a transformative era.

Though his reign was short, his legacy was long. The emperor was succeeded by his third son. This son became the Kangxi Emperor.

The Kangxi Emperor went on to reign for sixty years. Because fewer documents survived from the Shunzhi era, it remains a relatively little-known period. Yet, it was the foundation for the long Qing dynasty. The era shaped how the Manchus and the Chinese people lived together. It set the stage for the massive empire that followed.
