Shower gel is a liquid used to clean the body.

Many people call it body wash. It is different from traditional bar soap. Bar soap is made through a process called saponification. This involves reacting oil or fat with lye. Shower gels do not use this method. Instead, they use synthetic detergents. These detergents come from plant sources or petroleum. This makes the gel feel different on your skin. It often has a lower pH value than soap. This can make it feel less drying. Some people say it does not feel "squeaky clean."

To make the gel work, scientists use surfactants. These are special compounds that lower surface tension. This helps the liquid wash away oily dirt. Surfactants can make up 50 percent of the gel. The rest is a mix of water and other things. These ingredients help thicken, preserve, or color the gel. Manufacturers often use two different surfactants together. One surfactant helps the gel foam and clean well. A secondary surfactant adds mildness to prevent skin irritation. They also add emulsifiers like diethanolamine to keep ingredients from separating.

Liquid soap first appeared in the 1800s. In 1865, William Shepphard patented a liquid soap formula. Later, the product became very popular. B.J. Johnson helped this happen with Palmolive soap in 1898. Over time, formulas changed to be gentler on skin. This led to special products like shower gel. In the 1950s, people started switching from bars to liquids. This happened because of new scents and better packaging. Liquid soap was also very convenient for people to use.

Shower gels come in many different styles. Some are made for men and may contain menthol. Menthol gives a cooling sensation on the skin. Other gels for men are made for both hair and body. Products for children often smell like fruit or cotton candy. These bottles might even show characters from movies. Companies also use different colors for different people. Women's products often use bright colors and floral scents. Men's products often use darker packaging and sporty scents.

People care a lot about what is in their gel. In the past, many gels used tiny plastic spheres called microbeads. These were used to scrub the skin. However, microbeads were too small for water filters. They ended up in oceans and could harm animals. To fix this, the United States passed the Microbead-Free Waters Act in 2015. This law banned microbeads starting in 2017. The UK also banned them in 2018. Now, many makers focus on cleaner and eco-friendly ingredients. Some even offer refill stations to help the planet.
