At least 37 incomplete fossil specimens of this species have been recovered from the Nevada sites. 
Other species have been identified in different parts of North America. Shonisaurus sikanniensis was named in 2004 from fossils found in the Pardonet Formation of British Columbia. This species lived during the middle Norian age. There has been scientific debate regarding its classification. In 2011, a study by Sander and colleagues suggested it belonged to the genus Shastasaurus. However, a 2013 study by Ji and colleagues reasserted that it was closely related to Shonisaurus. 
Finding Shonisaurus fossils helps scientists understand the wider ecosystem of the Late Triassic. In the Pardonet Formation, researchers have found other ichthyosaurs like Macgowania and Callawayia. They also found coelacanths, which are a type of fish, such as Whiteia banffensis. The environment also contained various mollusks, including ammonites and bivalves. Even specimens in Alaska have been identified as Shonisaurus sp. These connections allow researchers to see how these giant reptiles fit into a complex web of ancient marine life.
