Even President Franklin D. Roosevelt said her smiling face helped people forget their troubles. She was so talented that she won a special Juvenile Academy Award in 1935. This award honored her great work in movies during the year 1934. Her fame was so huge that she became a part of popular culture everywhere.

Her journey into movies began when she was only three years old.

A casting director named Charles Lamont spotted her while she was at a dance school. He invited her to audition, and she signed a contract in 1932. She started by appearing in short comedy films called Baby Burlesks. Later, she moved into longer films like the Frolics of Youth series. Her big breakthrough came in 1934 with the movie Stand Up and Cheer!

In that film, she performed a song-and-dance number with an actor named James Dunn. This performance helped make her a massive star.

Shirley's early life was shaped by her family in California.

She was born on April 23, 1928, in Santa Monica. Her parents were Gertrude Amelia Temple and George Francis Temple. Her mother encouraged her to practice singing and dancing. Gertrude even helped style Shirley's famous hair into ringlets. As Shirley became successful, her parents worked hard to manage her career. They even hired a lawyer to make sure she was paid fairly for her work. By 1934, her salary grew to $1,000 per week.

Throughout the 1930s, Shirley appeared in many popular movies.

Some of her famous films included Bright Eyes and Curly Top. In Bright Eyes, she sang her signature song, "On the Good Ship Lollipop." She also starred in The Little Princess, which was her first movie in color. Even though she was a star, she tried to live a normal life. In 1939, she started attending the Westlake School for Girls as a seventh-grader. Her classmates treated her just like any other student. She graduated from that school in May 1945.

After her time as a child star, Shirley began a second career in leadership.
