Although North Korean authorities claimed he came willingly, Shin and Choi made secret audio recordings. These tapes helped prove they were taken against their will.

Shin and Choi remained in North Korean captivity for eight years. During this time, they were sometimes kept in comfortable housing. However, after two failed escape attempts, Shin was held in a prison for over two years. In 1983, he was brought to Pyongyang to meet Kim Jong Il. At a dinner party, he was reunited with Choi. The two remarried shortly after this meeting. While in North Korea, Shin directed seven films. One of the most famous was a monster movie called Pulgasari, which featured a giant creature.

In 1986, the couple finally found a way to escape. They were in Vienna, Austria, for a film festival when they fled. They sought political asylum at the United States embassy. This allowed them to move to the United States for protection. Shin became an American citizen in 1989. He adopted the name Simon S. Sheen and worked on American films. He directed movies for children, such as 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up. Eventually, he and Choi decided to return to South Korea in 1994.

Shin's return to South Korea was a major event. He had been worried that the government would not believe his story about the kidnapping. However, he was eventually welcomed back.
