It sits at the westernmost point of Honshu, which is the largest island in Japan. The city is the largest in its prefecture and the fifth-largest in the Chūgoku region. It is famous for being the "home of Fugu." This nickname comes from the pufferfish caught and cooked there. In fact, Shimonoseki is the largest harvester of pufferfish in the entire country.

The geography of the city is quite unique. It has a long shape from north to south. The land looks like a fan that opens toward the Seto Inland Sea. To the west, the city borders the Sea of Japan. The Kanmon Straits separate the city from the southern sea. Two rivers help shape the landscape. The Asa River flows from the north into the central area. The Ariho River flows from the northeast toward the east.

During the Kamakura period, people often called it Akamanoseki. The city has seen many famous events. The Heike and Genji clans fought at the Battle of Dan-no-ura near the Kanmon Bridge.
