The city sits on the banks of the Tunga River. This river is a major source of drinking water. A dam helps provide this water to the people. Shivamogga is also known as the "Gateway of Malnad." This is because it is near the hilly Western Ghats. These hills are a World Heritage site. They are famous for being very green and getting much rain.
