Shi Nai'an was a writer from China. He lived a long time ago. People say he wrote a book called Water Margin. This book is a very famous story. It is one of the Four Great Classical Novels.

We do not know much about his life. Some scholars think he lived near Hangzhou. Others think his name was made up later. One scholar named Lu Xun had this idea. In the 1950s, a team went to look for him. They went to Xinghua county in Jiangsu. They did not find any proof of his life. A family record seemed to help. But we do not know if that record was real.

Some people think he taught another writer. That writer was Luo Guanzhong. Luo wrote a book called Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This is another famous book. Scholars still debate if Shi was real. They may not know who wrote Water Margin. Even so, people still honor him. There is a writing prize named after him. It is called the Shi Nai'an Literary Prize.
