She has taught at many great schools. These include the University of Michigan and Columbia University. Now, she is a professor at UCLA. Her work helps us understand how societies change. She looks at how real people make choices. This is called agency. She also studies how people push back against power. This is often called resistance.

Ortner's ideas are part of social theory. This is a way to think about how groups of people live together. She believes that people's daily actions shape their world. She also focuses on how things change over time. In 1984, she wrote a famous article about this. It was called "Theory in Anthropology Since the Sixties." Later, she collected many of these ideas in a book. That book came out in 2006. It is titled "Anthropology and Social Theory."

Much of her early work happened in Nepal. Between 1966 and 1968, she lived there to study the Sherpa people. She studied their religious rituals and their daily lives. In 1978, she published her first book, "Sherpas Through Their Rituals." She also wrote about Sherpas on Mt. Everest. Her book "Life and Death on Mt. Everest" came out in 1999. It won a special prize in 2004. This book looks at how Sherpas work with mountain climbers.

Ortner is also a leader in feminist theory. This study looks at how gender affects people in society. In 1972, she wrote a very important article. It asked if women and men are treated differently by culture. This work has been translated into 10 different languages. She also studies how power and fairness work in the world. She looks at how race and class change a person's life. She wants to know how these things make life different for everyone.

In her later years, she began studying America. She looked at her own high school class from 1958. This class was from Weequahic High School in New Jersey. She wrote a book about them in 2003. It is called "New Jersey Dreaming." She also studies modern movies and films. She thinks films can show us how people feel about the world. Her newest book is from 2023.
