Le Fanu had a very specific way of writing his stories. Instead of using loud or shocking scares, he focused on tone. He liked to keep important details hidden from the reader. He often left the supernatural parts of his stories a mystery. For example, a character might see a strange animal. The reader might wonder if it was a real ghost or just a trick of the mind. This style is called indirect horror. It makes the reader feel a sense of wonder and unease.

His father was a clergyman who worked in many parts of Ireland. Because his family had money problems, they had to sell his father's library. Le Fanu used those books to teach himself many things. He began writing his own poetry when he was only fifteen years old. He later studied law at Trinity College Dublin. Even though he studied law, he chose to become a writer instead.

He wrote many important works during his life. In 1838, he wrote his first ghost story called "The Ghost and the Bone-Setter." He also wrote a famous novel called "The House by the Churchyard" in 1863. One of his most important pieces is a story called "Carmilla," published in 1872.

James thought Le Fanu was a top-tier writer of ghost stories. Today, his ideas live on in many different places. You can find his influence in films, operas, and even video games.
