Shen Yue was a highly influential Chinese scholar and official. He lived during the Southern Dynasties era. This was a period with several different ruling families. He served the Liu Song dynasty first. Later, he worked for the Southern Qi dynasty. Finally, he served the Liang dynasty. He was born in Huzhou, located in Zhejiang. His life spanned from approximately 441 to 513.

As a historian, Shen Yue performed massive intellectual tasks. He was largely responsible for compiling the Book of Song. This work recorded the history of the Liu Song dynasty. One major part of this book was the Treatise on Music. This section spanned volumes 19 through 22. It focused on the musical practices of that time. Another historian named Pei Ziye later wrote a shorter version. This version was titled the Summary of Song. Shen Yue famously said he could not reach the standard of that summary.

Shen Yue also transformed the technical side of Chinese poetry. He was a pioneer in the study of prosody. Prosody is the study of the patterns of rhythm and sound in poetry. He developed the first rules for tonal euphony. This term refers to the pleasant combination of sounds. He used a system called "four tones and eight defects." This system looked at how different tones interacted. His theories became crucial for later poets. They especially influenced the lüshi, or regulated verse, of the Tang dynasty.

His work extended to how we categorize different literary styles. Shen Yue is credited with a specific use of the term Yuefu. In the Han dynasty, Yuefu referred to the imperial Music Bureau. Shen Yue applied the term to a specific genre of ballad-style poetry. This helped create a general category for that type of verse. He was also a leading scholar on musical practices. He wrote specialized essays on qilin and omenology. Omenology is the study of signs that predict the future.

Shen Yue was also a talented poet himself. He was known for his deep love of the art form. One famous example is his set of poems called the Six Poems on Remembering. These poems describe a beloved person at six different times of day. Some scholars note that these verses are quite intimate. This level of detail was unusual for Classical Chinese verse. His writing showed a high level of skill and emotion.

His political life involved difficult and serious decisions. In 502, Xiao Yan became Emperor Wu of the Liang dynasty. The Emperor initially wanted to treat Xiao Baorong well. Xiao Baorong was a man who had been the Emperor of Qi. The Emperor planned to give him a fiefdom in Nanhai Commandery. Shen Yue advised the Emperor against this kindness. He quoted Cao Cao, a famous historical figure. He warned that one should not face real disaster to gain a hollow reputation.

Following Shen Yue's advice, Emperor Wu ordered Xiao Baorong to be killed. This event had a deep impact on Shen Yue. He fell gravely ill shortly after this decision. During his illness, he had a troubling dream. In the dream, Xiao Baorong used a sword to cut off his tongue. Shen Yue consulted a shaman about this dream. The shaman confirmed the dream was real. To find peace, Shen Yue held rituals with priests and monks. He wanted to show that he did not personally wish for the death.
