Shear mapping

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Imagine a square shape on a piece of paper.

VerticalShear m=1.25 (blue and red)

You can tilt the shape to make it look slanted. This is called a shear mapping. In a shear, every point moves in one fixed direction. The amount each point moves depends on how far it is from a starting line. Points on that line do not move at all.

Points on one side might move right. Points on the other side might move left. This can turn a square into a tilted shape called a parallelogram. It can even turn a circle into an oval.

Even though the shape looks different, some things stay the same. A shear mapping does not change the area inside a shape. If you shear a 3D object, the volume stays the same too. This is very useful in science. It helps show how layers of liquid slide past each other.

This movement is called laminar flow. You can also see shearing in the letters we read. It is the main way to make upright letters look like slanted italics. Computer programs use these steps to rotate digital images. It is a very fast and simple way to work.
