Imagine you have a shape on a sheet of paper.

You can move that shape in many ways. You can slide it to a new spot. You can turn it or stretch it.

These movements are called affine transformations. An affine transformation is a way to change a shape while keeping certain rules.

One rule is that straight lines stay straight. If three points are on one line, they stay on a line. Another rule is about parallel lines. If two lines never touch, they will still never touch after the change. This is called preserving parallelism.

Even though the shape changes, these parts stay the same.

An affine transformation is made of two steps. First, there is a linear transformation. This part can rotate, flip, or stretch the shape. Second, there is a translation. A translation is just a slide to a new place. These two steps work together. They can even change where the center of the shape is. This is different from a purely linear map. Scientists use these math ideas in many ways. They help with computer graphics, robots, and seeing how things move.
