Shareholder activism

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people own parts of a big company. These people are called shareholders. Sometimes, they want to change how a company works. This is called shareholder activism.

Activists can use a small stake to make a change. A stake is a piece of the company. They might want to save more money. They might also want to help the planet. For example, one group helped Exxon. They wanted the company to use less fossil fuel. This is a non-financial goal.

In the 1980s, people called activists "corporate raiders." This was because they were seen as aggressive. Now, many see them as helpers. They help companies do better work. This can help the value of the company grow.

Activists use many ways to speak up. They can write letters or use social media. They can also hold proxy battles. A proxy battle is a way to vote for new leaders. In the past, this was hard to do. Now, it is easier for many to join in. This happens in the US, Europe, and Asia.
