Shapur II was a very important leader of the Sasanian Empire.

He was the tenth King of Kings, which is a special title for a ruler. He ruled for a very long time, from the year 309 until 379. This made him the longest-reigning king in the history of his empire. He was the son of a king named Hormizd II. His rule started when he was just a baby or even before he was born.

Some old stories say he was crowned while his mother was still pregnant. Modern historians think this story is likely a legend rather than a fact.

During his time as king, Shapur II made his empire much stronger. When he was 16 years old, he led his army on big trips. He fought against Arab tribes that were raiding his lands. He moved through places like Asoristan and even reached the Hajar Mountains.

Shapur II also built a big wall near a place called al-Hira. This was called the "wall of the Arabs." He built it to stop raids and keep his people safe. He also moved some tribes to different areas to help control the borders.

Shapur II also spent much of his life fighting the Roman Empire. He wanted to win back lands that his family had lost in an old treaty. This treaty had given land in Mesopotamia and Armenia to the Romans. Shapur also had problems with the Romans because they supported his brother, Hormizd. The Romans also became Christians, which caused tension with Shapur's people.

Shapur fought many battles to change these old rules. He even made an alliance with a king named Grumbates to help him fight.

One famous part of these wars involved a Roman leader named Julian. Julian led a large army to attack the Sasanian capital, Ctesiphon. He won a battle there, but he could not take the city. During his retreat, Julian died in a small fight.

After Julian died, a new leader named Jovian took over. Jovian signed a peace treaty that gave more land to Shapur. This included areas near the Tigris River and places like Nisibis and Singara.

Religion was also a big part of Shapur II's rule. He helped finish the collection of the Avesta. These are the sacred texts for the religion of Zoroastrianism. He also had strict rules about how people practiced their faith. In places like Armenia, he built fire temples for Zoroastrianism.
