Shah Alam has an interesting history as a planned city. Before it was built, the area was known as Sungai Renggam. It was once filled with rubber and oil palm estates. In 1973, the government decided to build a new township there. A planning advisor from the United Nations helped choose the site. This location was chosen because it sits between Kuala Lumpur and Port Klang. The city was officially named by the Sultan of Selangor.
