It is the seventh day of the week. This day begins on Friday evening at sunset. It lasts until three stars appear in the sky on Saturday night. People use this time to stop their regular work. This helps them focus on their spiritual lives. It is also a wonderful time to spend with family.

There are many ways to honor the day through special actions. Many people prepare by cleaning their homes or taking a bath. They might even get a haircut to feel ready. On the day, people often wear nice, festive clothing.

Families eat three festive meals together. They eat a special braided bread called challah. They also say blessings over wine or grape juice. These meals help make the day feel joyful and different from the rest of the week.

Historians and scholars look at many ideas about where Shabbat began. The Jewish tradition says it is their first and most sacred institution. It comes from the story of creation in the book of Genesis. In that story, God rested on the seventh day. Some scholars also look at ancient Babylon for clues. They study old words like "šapattu" to see if they are related. However, many experts disagree on whether these old ideas are truly connected.

Shabbat has many important rules and traditions in Jewish law. The day is ushered in by lighting candles.

Many families light these candles 18 minutes before the sun sets. During morning services, the Torah is read in seven sections. This is more than any other holy day. Some people even call Shabbat a "queen" or a "bride." Others use the word "king" to describe its importance. These names show how much respect people have for the day.

Shabbat connects to many parts of Jewish life and history. It is a time to remember the Exodus from Egypt. It also helps people feel a taste of a future peaceful age. The day ends with a ritual called Havdalah.

During Havdalah, people use wine, sweet spices, and a special candle. This ritual helps separate the holy day from the normal week. Even though people have different ways of celebrating, the goal is the same. It is a time to find peace and joy.
