Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander was a Roman emperor who ruled from 222 to 235 AD.

He was a member of the Severan dynasty. He became the youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire at just 13 years old. This made him the second youngest sole ruler in Rome's history. His reign lasted for 13 years. This was the longest reign of a sole emperor since the time of Antoninus Pius. His rule was a period of both domestic prosperity and intense military pressure.

Alexander's rise to power was organized by his grandmother, Julia Maesa. She believed Alexander had more potential to lead than his cousin, Elagabalus. Elagabalus was becoming very unpopular with the people. Maesa arranged for Elagabalus to adopt Alexander as his heir. After Elagabalus was killed by his own guards, Alexander took the throne. The Roman army hailed him as emperor on March 13, 222. The Senate officially ratified his position the very next day. He received titles including Augustus, Pater patriae, and Pontifex maximus.

Because he was a young adolescent, Alexander relied heavily on adult guidance. He was closely guided by his grandmother before her death in 224. After that, his mother, Julia Mamaea, became his primary advisor. Because of this close relationship, he was sometimes called "Mamaeas."

He lacked experience in government and warcraft. However, the army eventually came to admire his moderate behavior. This was a sharp contrast to the behavior of the previous emperor.

Alexander worked to improve the administration of the Roman state. He employed famous jurists, such as Ulpian, to oversee the justice system. He also created a municipal council of 14 members. This council helped the urban prefect manage the 14 districts of Rome. Alexander also worked on public works and architecture. He restored the Baths of Nero, which became known as the Baths of Alexander. He also built the Nymphaeum of Alexander, a great fountain at the end of the Aqua Claudia aqueduct.

Economic changes occurred during his reign as well. When he first became emperor, he reduced the silver purity of the denarius from 46.5% to 43%. This meant the silver weight dropped from 1.41 grams to 1.30 grams. Later, in 229, he revalued the currency to increase its strength. He raised the silver purity to 45% and the weight to 1.46 grams. By the following year, he raised the purity even higher to 50.5% with a weight of 1.50 grams. He also instituted loan offices to provide money at moderate interest rates.

Despite these domestic successes, the military faced many challenges. The Sassanid Empire, led by Ardashir I, invaded Roman provinces in 231. Alexander organized a three-fold invasion of the Sassanian Empire in 233. He led the main body of the army to recapture northern Mesopotamia. However, the southern army was destroyed by Sassanian horse-archers. The northern army also suffered from the extreme cold of Armenia.

These military struggles caused a breakdown in discipline within the Roman legions.

Discipline issues were linked to several different factors. Some historians believe the decline of the Severan dynasty caused this. Others argue that Alexander appeared too weak to lead soldiers. Some claim his mother's influence and his own spending habits caused anger. In 228, the Praetorian Guard even murdered the prefect Ulpian in Alexander's presence. This led to a three-day battle between the soldiers and the people of Rome. The conflict resulted in several parts of the city being set on fire.

Alexander's reign ended in 235 through a violent conspiracy. He, his mother, and his advisors were all assassinated. He was succeeded by Maximinus Thrax. This event marked the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century. This period lasted for nearly fifty years. It was characterized by civil wars, foreign invasions, and the collapse of the monetary economy.
