An epic film is a grand story that often covers many characters and large events. This movie is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. It tells a story about survival, bravery, and the relationship between different social classes. The film is famous for its deep humanism and its influence on how action is filmed.

The plot is set in a mountain village during the Edo period in 1586. A gang of bandits plans to raid the village to steal crops after the harvest. To protect themselves, the farmers decide to hire samurai to fight for them. The village elder, Gisaku, advises the farmers to offer food in exchange for protection. The farmers find Kambei, an experienced rōnin, who is a samurai without a master. Kambei agrees to help and recruits a diverse group of warriors. This team includes the second-in-command Gorobei, the comrade Shichirōji, the amiable Heihachi, and the master swordsman Kyūzō. They also accept Kikuchiyo, a wild man who claims to be a samurai.

The film follows a detailed process of preparation and conflict. First, the samurai survey the village and train the farmers to fight. The relationship between the classes is complicated, as seen when Kikuchiyo reveals he was born a farmer. This realization causes the samurai to feel shame for the suffering farmers endure. To build unity, Heihachi creates a flag representing both the samurai and the village. As the barley ripens, Kambei organizes the villagers into squads for defense. The tension rises as the bandits approach, leading to a violent struggle for the village. During the final battle, many characters, including Heihachi, Gorobei, Kyūzō, and Kikuchiyo, lose their lives.

Creating the film was a massive undertaking that required intense research. Kurosawa and his screenwriters, Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni, spent over six weeks writing the script. They created detailed plans for every character, even noting how they tied their shoes. Kurosawa even built family trees for the village residents to ensure the story felt real. To prepare for filming, the production spent three months on location scouting. The crew built a large studio set containing twenty-three houses to represent the village.

Production was both difficult and expensive for the studio, Toho. Filming began on May 27, 1953, and lasted for 148 working days. The crew worked at Toho Studios and in the Shizuoka and Kanagawa Prefectures. At one point, the production ran out of money, but Toho provided more funding. This made Seven Samurai the most expensive Japanese film made at that time. To capture the intensity of the final battle, Kurosawa used a multi-camera setup and telephoto lenses.

Seven Samurai was released in Japan on April 26, 1954, with a runtime of 207 minutes. While it was the highest-grossing film in Japan that year, the high production costs meant it was not highly profitable. In the United States, the film grossed $145,800 during 1956 and 1957. The film's reception varied by country. In Japan, critics had mixed responses, sometimes criticizing its length. In the United States, the response was generally positive, with reviewers comparing the film to Western movies. The film was also nominated for two Academy Awards and three BAFTAs.

The legacy of the film is seen in its massive influence on global cinema. Many Western filmmakers have remade its story and action style. The most notable example is the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven. Beyond movies, the film's impact has reached anime and video games. Scholars study the film through formalistic and humanistic lenses. They analyze its cinematography, its music, and how it explores the morality of heroism. By looking at the relationship between the samurai and the environment, scholars find deep meaning in Kurosawa's work.
