He was also a conductor, which is a person who leads an orchestra. Many people call him one of the best piano players of his time. He used his great skill as a performer to show everything a piano can do.

Music was a big part of his life from the very beginning.

He began taking piano lessons when he was only four years old. His mother noticed he could play parts of songs just by listening. She hired a teacher named Anna Ornatskaya to give him formal lessons. Later, he studied at the Moscow Conservatory to become even better. He lived with a strict teacher named Nikolai Zverev for four years. During this time, he shared a room with other students and practiced for three hours every single day.

His early life had many changes and some hard moments.

He was born into a family with a long history. His father was an army officer, but the family lost their estates due to money problems. This meant they had to move to a small flat in Saint Petersburg. Rachmaninoff also faced sadness when his sister Sofia and his sister Yelena died. His sister Yelena had introduced him to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. These early experiences and the sounds of church bells helped shape his own musical style.

In 1892, Rachmaninoff graduated from the Conservatory with the highest honors.

He won a Great Gold Medal for his opera named Aleko. This opera was so successful that the Bolshoi Theatre decided to perform it. He also wrote a very famous piece called Prelude in C-sharp minor in 1892. This piece became one of his most popular works. In 1901, after a difficult time, he finished his famous Piano Concerto No. 2. This work was very well received by many people.

As he grew older, Rachmaninoff traveled to many different places.

After the Russian Revolution, he and his family moved to New York in 1918. He spent much of his time touring across the United States and Europe. He loved to spend his summers at a villa in Switzerland. Even though he traveled a lot, he wrote fewer new pieces of music after leaving Russia. He eventually moved to Beverly Hills, California, where he died in 1943. His music continues to be played by piano players all over the world today.
