Serge Lang was a famous math expert. He was born in France in 1927. He later moved to the United States. Lang studied math at Princeton University. He earned his PhD there in 1951.

Lang was a very busy writer. He wrote many books for students. His book called *Algebra* was very important. It changed how teachers teach math to adults. He even wrote books during his summer breaks!

In class, Lang was a passionate teacher. He wanted his students to be very clear. He wanted them to find the truth. Sometimes he would shout to get attention. He even threw chalk at students who did not listen.

Lang also cared about politics. He spoke out against the Vietnam War. He worked hard to fight for what he believed was true. He fought against people he thought used bad science. Later in life, he disagreed with doctors about HIV and AIDS. He claimed the link was not proven. This was a very difficult time for his work. He was a man who always had much to say.
