The name "Seoul" actually means "capital city" in Korean. It is a native word rather than a word from Chinese. In the 1600s, a Dutch sailor named Hendrick Hamel wrote about the capital. He called it "Sior" in his famous journal. After World War II, the city finally took its official name. This name is used in many languages around the world today.

Today, Seoul is a very busy and modern place. About 9.6 million people live in the city.

The city is also shaped by the Han River, which flows through the region. Many people live and work near the river in various parks and districts. The landscape combines these natural features with very dense urban development. This creates a mix of high hills and crowded city streets. It is a place where nature and massive buildings exist side by side.

Human history in this area began many thousands of years ago. Evidence shows people lived here between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago. Around 4,000 B.C., residents lived in huts with lowered floors called umjip.

By 3,000 B.C., people were eating cooked grain and fish. During the Bronze Age, farming became much more common. The Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site is a major place where Stone Age materials have been found. This shows that the Han River basin has been a home for people for a very long time.

As time passed, different kingdoms fought for control of the region. The Baekje people founded a capital called Wiryeseong in 18 B.C. Later, the Silla kingdom took control of the area in 553. The city has held many different names throughout its long history. It was called Hanyang during the Northern and Southern States period. It was also known as Hanseong during the Joseon dynasty. The name "Seoul" is actually a native Korean word. It simply means "capital city."

The Joseon dynasty changed the city forever when it became the official capital. In 1394, the founder Yi Seong-gye chose Hanyang as the new center of power. The city was built to reflect the ideas of Korean Confucianism. Workers built a large Fortress Wall to surround the city.

This wall helped define the different areas of the city. Some parts were inside the wall, while others were in the surrounding areas. In the late 19th century, the city began to modernize. It became the first city in East Asia to have electricity, telephones, and trolley cars all at once.

Modern history brought both great challenges and rapid growth. In the early 20th century, the Empire of Japan occupied the city. They renamed it Keijō to avoid confusion with other names. The Korean War later brought fierce battles to the streets. The city changed hands four times and was left mostly in ruins.

However, the city underwent a massive reconstruction. It experienced very rapid urbanization to become the modern hub it is today. This transformation turned a ruined city into a global leader in technology and culture.

Today, Seoul is a global center for business and entertainment. The population was over 10 million at its peak. As of 2024, the population stands at about 9.6 million residents. The city is home to 15 Fortune Global 500 companies. Major giants like Samsung, LG, and Hyundai have headquarters in the Seoul Capital Area.
