Semyon Timoshenko was a famous leader in the Soviet army.

However, his military career faced a major setback in 1942. He led a large force of 640,000 men during the Second Battle of Kharkov. This was meant to be a major spring offensive. The German forces struck his southern flank and surrounded his armies. This resulted in a large Soviet defeat. Because of this, Stalin relieved him from his command of the Stalingrad Front in July 1942.
During the final years of the war, Timoshenko acted as a high-level coordinator. He represented the Stavka to oversee many different army fronts. He coordinated the Volkhov and Leningrad fronts during the battles near Leningrad. He also oversaw the North Caucasian Front and the Black Sea Fleet.
After World War II ended, Timoshenko continued to serve in the military. He held commands in several different Soviet military districts. He did not retire until 1960.
