A semicolon is a special punctuation mark used in writing. It looks like a small dot sitting above a comma.

This mark is very useful for connecting ideas. It can join two complete thoughts that are closely related. You might use it instead of a word like "and." Using a semicolon gives both ideas equal importance in a sentence. It also acts as a "super comma" in long lists. If your list items already have commas, semicolons keep things clear. This prevents the sentence from becoming a jumble of marks.

Writing with semicolons follows specific rules in English. You usually place them between two independent clauses. These are parts of a sentence that could stand alone. After a semicolon, you typically use a lower case letter. You only use a capital letter if the word is a proper noun. In some lists, the semicolon separates complex items from each other. For example, you might list people with their specific descriptions. This helps the reader see where one person ends and the next begins. It makes the structure of the sentence much easier to follow.

History shows us that the semicolon has been around for a long time. It appeared in a book by Pietro Bembo in 1496. This book was printed by the Aldine Press. Later, a man named Aldo Manuzio explained how to use it. He believed punctuation helped divide sentences to make them understandable. Around 1580, Henry Denham began using it properly in English texts. By 1640, Ben Jonson described it in a grammar book. He said it represented a "longer breath" than a comma. This helped readers know when to pause while reading aloud.

Many people have compared the semicolon to music and math. In 1762, Robert Lowth compared it to musical notes. He said the semicolon is a pause double the length of a comma. This is similar to how certain notes work in a song. Other writers have noted how its use changes over time. In Britain, the use of semicolons in fiction fell by 25% between 1991 and 2021. Even so, the mark remains a key part of many languages. In Arabic, it is called a "dotted comma." In French, it is known as a "point-virgule."

Today, the semicolon is very important for technology and computers. Many programming languages use it to separate or end statements. In languages like Java or C, it is called a terminator. This tells the computer that one command is finished. This helps the computer follow the rules of the code. Some newer languages like Python do not require them. In these cases, the computer figures out the end of the line on its own. Whether in a book or a computer program, the semicolon provides structure. It helps organize information so it makes sense to us.
