A semicolon is a small mark used in writing. It looks like a dot sitting above a comma.

This mark helps people read more easily. One common use is to join two full ideas. These ideas must be closely related to each other. You can use a semicolon instead of a word like "and." It can also act like a "super comma." This happens when you make a long list. If the items in your list already have commas, use semicolons to separate them. This keeps the list from looking messy.

In the past, people thought about punctuation as a way to breathe. A writer named Ben Jonson said a semicolon is like a long breath. It is longer than a comma but shorter than a period. In music, some people compared it to different types of notes. Semicolons are also very important for computers. Many programming languages use them to end a line of code. This tells the computer that one command is finished. This helps the computer follow the rules of the code.
