It is bordered by Perak to the north and Pahang to the east. To the south, it meets Negeri Sembilan. The western border is defined by the Strait of Malacca. Interestingly, Selangor surrounds two federal territories: Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Both of these areas were originally part of the state. Selangor is often called Darul Ehsan, which means "Abode of Sincerity." It is the most developed and populous state in Malaysia.

The geography of Selangor transitions from coastal plains to rugged highlands. The western coastal areas are relatively level and flat. As you move east, the terrain becomes increasingly hilly and mountainous. These mountains are part of the Titiwangsa Mountains.

Selangor possesses a diverse and rich natural environment. The state experiences an equatorial climate, which is warm and wet. It contains 250,129 hectares of permanent reserve forest. This forest covers about 32 percent of the total land. The reserves include 82,890 hectares of peat swamp forest. Along the coast, there are 18,998 hectares of mangrove forest.

The history of Selangor stretches back to ancient times. Archaeologists have found bronze axes and a bronze bell near Klang.

The bell dates from the 2nd century BC. During the 15th century, the area was under the Malacca Sultanate. At that time, the region consisted of separate river states. In the 17th century, Bugis mercenaries from Sulawesi settled in the area. They eventually gained significant political influence in the region. In 1766, Raja Salehuddin founded the current hereditary Selangor Sultanate. He established the capital at Kuala Selangor. This makes Selangor unique as the only state on the peninsula founded by the Bugis.

Economic changes in the 19th century transformed the state. The discovery of large tin reserves caused an economic boom. Mining activities in places like Ampang helped Kuala Lumpur grow. However, the struggle for control over tin revenue led to conflict. This resulted in the Selangor Civil War between 1867 and 1874. During this time, many Chinese migrant laborers arrived to work in the mines. British involvement increased due to these conflicts and coastal piracy. In 1874, Sultan Abdul Samad accepted a British Resident. This system allowed the British to govern while the Sultan remained the ruler. Eventually, Selangor joined other states to form the Federated Malay States in 1896.

Selangor is now the economic powerhouse of Malaysia. In 2022, its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was RM 384 billion. This is approximately $82 billion USD. This amount represents 25.6 percent of the entire country's GDP. The state features highly developed infrastructure, including advanced highways and transport.

The political landscape of the state has shifted over many decades. In 1974, Selangor ceded Kuala Lumpur to the federal government. This created a new Federal Territory. The Sultan built the Kota Darul Ehsan arch to mark this event.

Later, in 1995, the state ceded land to create Putrajaya. Putrajaya now serves as the administrative and judicial capital of Malaysia. Despite these changes, Selangor remains a central hub for the nation. It connects historical traditions with modern industrial success. The state continues to be a leader in Malaysian development.
