Selangor possesses a diverse and rich natural environment. The state experiences an equatorial climate, which is warm and wet. It contains 250,129 hectares of permanent reserve forest. This forest covers about 32 percent of the total land. The reserves include 82,890 hectares of peat swamp forest. Along the coast, there are 18,998 hectares of mangrove forest.

The history of Selangor stretches back to ancient times. Archaeologists have found bronze axes and a bronze bell near Klang.

Economic changes in the 19th century transformed the state. The discovery of large tin reserves caused an economic boom. Mining activities in places like Ampang helped Kuala Lumpur grow. However, the struggle for control over tin revenue led to conflict. This resulted in the Selangor Civil War between 1867 and 1874. During this time, many Chinese migrant laborers arrived to work in the mines. British involvement increased due to these conflicts and coastal piracy. In 1874, Sultan Abdul Samad accepted a British Resident. This system allowed the British to govern while the Sultan remained the ruler. Eventually, Selangor joined other states to form the Federated Malay States in 1896.
Selangor is now the economic powerhouse of Malaysia. In 2022, its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was RM 384 billion. This is approximately $82 billion USD. This amount represents 25.6 percent of the entire country's GDP. The state features highly developed infrastructure, including advanced highways and transport.
The political landscape of the state has shifted over many decades. In 1974, Selangor ceded Kuala Lumpur to the federal government. This created a new Federal Territory. The Sultan built the Kota Darul Ehsan arch to mark this event.
