Negeri Sembilan is a unique state located on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
The state's name is deeply connected to its history and the people who settled there. "Negeri Sembilan" literally translates to "State of the Nine." This refers to the nine original chiefdoms, known as luaks, established by the Minangkabau people. These settlers originally came from West Sumatra in present-day Indonesia during the 15th century.
The geography of Negeri Sembilan is defined by a central mountainous spine. This spine is part of the Titiwangsa Mountains. The Titiwangsa is a southern subrange of the Tenasserim Hills. This range spans from southern Myanmar through Thailand and into Peninsular Malaysia.

Negeri Sembilan features a unique system of government known as a coregency. Unlike other Malaysian states with hereditary monarchs, the ruler here is elected. This ruler is called the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
The history of the region reaches back much further than the Minangkabau settlement. Human activity can be traced to the Pasoh Caves near Simpang Pertang.
Colonial intervention in the late 19th century significantly altered the state's borders and leadership. The British began intervening in Sungai Ujong in 1874 to protect economic interests. This led to military conflicts, such as the Battle of Paroi in 1875.
Today, the economy is driven by manufacturing, services, and agriculture. The state covers a total land area of 6,686 square kilometers. This makes it the fourth smallest state in Malaysia.
