Seal script

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Long ago, people in China used a special way to write. This style is called seal script.

It grew from older ways of writing on bronze.

There were many different types of seal script. One style was called bird-worm seal script. It had very fancy lines. Some lines looked like birds or worms. People used this style on old swords and spears.

Later, one group made a standard way to write. This was the small seal script. A leader named Li Si helped make it the official rule. He made a book of 3,300 characters. This helped everyone use the same marks. Small seal script looks more square than other styles.

Many people used these marks for art. They also used them on seals, which are stamps. This writing was very important for ceremonies. It was an early step toward how people write today. Scholars still study these old marks to learn about the past.
