"text": "Seahorses are small, marine bony fish belonging to the genus Hippocampus. There are 46 known species within this genus. Their name comes from Ancient Greek words meaning \"sea monster\" and \"horse.\"

This name is fitting because they possess heads and necks that resemble horses. They are part of the Syngnathidae family, which also includes seadragons and pipefish. Seahorses are highly specialized creatures that live primarily in shallow, tropical, and temperate saltwater. They often inhabit sheltered environments like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds.

\n\nThe anatomy of a seahorse is very different from most other fish. Instead of having scales, they have thin skin stretched over a series of bony plates. These plates are arranged in rings around their bodies. Each species has a unique number of these rings. This bony armor protects them from predators, but it also means they lack ribs.

Seahorses also have a unique upright posture. They swim vertically using a dorsal fin on their backs to propel themselves. They use pectoral fins located near their eyes to steer. Because they are poor swimmers, they often use a prehensile tail to anchor themselves. A prehensile tail is one that can grasp and hold onto objects like seaweed or coral.

\n\nEvolutionary evidence suggests that seahorses are highly modified pipefish. Molecular and genetic data show that pipefish and seahorses diverged during the Late Oligocene epoch.

Some scientists believe seahorses evolved in response to tectonic events in the western Pacific Ocean. These events created large areas of shallow water. This new environment allowed seagrass habitats to expand, providing camouflage for the seahorses' upright bodies. The fossil record for seahorses is quite sparse. However, fossils of two pipefish-like species, H. sarmaticus and H. slovenicus, were found in Slovenia. These date back about 13 million years to the middle Miocene. Other fossils, such as Hippocampus guttulatus, were found in Italy and date to the Lower Pliocene, about 3 million years ago.\n\nFeeding is a complex process known as pivot-feeding.

Seahorses use their long snouts to capture small prey like copepods and tiny shrimp. This process happens in three distinct phases. First is the preparatory phase, where the seahorse slowly approaches the prey while flexing its head downward. Second is the expansive phase. During this step, the seahorse elevates its head and expands its buccal cavity, or mouth area, to suck in the prey. Finally, the recovery phase occurs when the jaws and head return to their original positions. This mechanism is vital because oral suction only works at very close ranges. Because seahorses have very simple digestive systems and lack a stomach, they must eat constantly to survive.\n\nSeahorse reproduction involves a fascinating and unusual process where the male carries the offspring.

Before mating, seahorses engage in complex courtship rituals that can last for several days. These rituals include a \"predawn dance\" where they may change color or swim side by side. The courtship involves four specific phases. Phase 1 involves brightening colors and body vibrations. Phase 2 and 3 involve \"pointing\" behaviors where the fish tilt their bodies. In the final phase, the pair rises together in the water column for copulation.

During this time, the female uses an ovipositor to deposit eggs into the male's ventral brood pouch. The male carries these eggs for 9 to 45 days until they emerge as fully developed young.

\n\nSeahorses are also known for their incredible ability to use camouflage. They can grow or reabsorb spiny appendages to better match their specific habitat. This helps them hide from predators and ambush prey. Their eyes can even move independently of each other, much like a chameleon's eyes. This allows them to look for food while staying alert for danger. Some species, like the dwarf seahorse (H. zosterae), are extremely small and slow. In fact, the dwarf seahorse is recognized as the slowest-moving fish in the world.
