life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sea lettuce is a group of green algae. Algae are simple plants that live in the water. You can find them along coasts all over the world. One kind is called Ulva lactuca. Its name means "lettuce" in Latin. These plants have a flat part called a thallus. This part looks like a green leaf. They stay in one place using a small disc called a holdfast. In calm areas, one leaf can grow over 400 mm long.

Many sea animals eat sea lettuce. Manatees and sea hares like to eat it. People eat it too. In places like China and Japan, it is called aosa. You can eat it raw in salads. You can also cook it in soups. It has vitamins and iron. Some people mix it into bread dough to make it better.

Sometimes, too much sea lettuce washes up on beaches. When it rots, it makes a gas called hydrogen sulfide. This gas can be very dangerous. In 2009, it caused a health scare in France. The bad air made people and animals sick. Some experts say this happens because of chemicals from farms. These chemicals wash out into the sea.
