The mud crab is a very important living thing. Some people also call it the mangrove crab. Its shell can be a dark brown color. It can also look like a mottled green. These crabs are known for being a robust size. They also have a lot of dense meat.

These crabs move to different places as they grow. Young crabs live in the mangrove zone. They stay there when the tide is low. Subadult crabs move to the intertidal zone to feed. They do this when the tide is high. They go back to subtidal waters when the tide goes low. Adult crabs live mainly below the low-tide mark.

People have studied these crabs for a long time. Peter Forsskål described this species in 1775. Many people look for these crabs to eat them. In Hawaii, people call them Samoan crabs. This is because they were brought from American Samoa. This helps us see how animals move to new places.

These crabs live in the Indo-Pacific region. You can find them in South Africa and Australia. They are very common in Sri Lanka. They live from southern Japan to Fiji and Samoa. Some have even been moved to Hawaii and Florida. A mother crab can have one million offspring. These babies can grow to be quite large.

Life can be hard for a mud crab. They are highly cannibalistic, which means they may eat each other. This often happens during molting. Molting is when a crab sheds its old shell. Hard-shelled crabs might attack a molting crab. Because people catch so many, there are special rules. You cannot catch females of any size. You also cannot harvest crabs smaller than 6 inches wide.
