There are at least six fairly complete skeletons found so far. Many other pieces like skulls and scutes have been found too. These fossils come from the Sokolki Assemblage Zone in Russia. This area was near the Ural Mountains. The fossils show that Scutosaurus had 18 teeth in its upper jaw. It also had 16 teeth in its lower jaw. These teeth had many small points called cusps to help it eat.

Learning about Scutosaurus helps us see how the world changed. It lived in a place that had many dry areas and floods. This reptile shared its home with many other animals. It lived alongside plant-eaters like Vivaxosaurus and meat-eaters like Inostrancevia. Even though it was heavy, it lived on land with mosses and ferns. It grew very fast when it was young. Once it reached 75% of its full size, it grew much slower. This change might have happened when the animal became an adult.

The history of discovering Scutosaurus involves many different scientists. Russian paleontologist Vladimir Prokhorovich Amalitskii found the first fossils in 1899. He worked in the Northern Dvina River area of Northern European Russia. He and his wife, Anne Amalitskii, excavated the site until 1914. They found many articulated skeletons in their natural positions. In 1917, David Meredith Seares Watson provided the first published name. Later, Aleksandra Hartmann-Weinberg established the genus Scutosaurus in 1930.

Scientists have debated the exact classification of these fossils for decades. For example, a genus called Proelginia was once separated from Scutosaurus. Some researchers thought they were the same, while others disagreed. In 2025, researchers affirmed that Proelginia is a distinct genus. There have also been debates about different species names like S. itilensis. Spelling and naming rules were even settled by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature in 2001. These changes help ensure scientists use the most accurate names.

Understanding the environment of Scutosaurus helps us see the Permian world. The fossils come from the Sokolki Assemblage Zone. This area was near the Ural Mountains in Russia. The landscape included dry, semi-arid plains and areas with shallow water.
