Some researchers thought they were the same, while others disagreed. In 2025, researchers affirmed that Proelginia is a distinct genus. There have also been debates about different species names like S. itilensis. Spelling and naming rules were even settled by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature in 2001. These changes help ensure scientists use the most accurate names.
Understanding the environment of Scutosaurus helps us see the Permian world. The fossils come from the Sokolki Assemblage Zone. This area was near the Ural Mountains in Russia. The landscape included dry, semi-arid plains and areas with shallow water.
