Morrison entered federal politics in 2007 when he was elected to the seat of Cook. He quickly moved into the shadow cabinet, which is a group of opposition leaders. Following the Coalition victory in 2013, he became the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection. In this role, he implemented Operation Sovereign Borders. He later served as the Minister for Social Services, where he established the Robodebt scheme. By September 2015, he had been promoted to the position of Treasurer.

In August 2018, a leadership challenge within the Liberal Party changed the course of Australian politics. After internal tensions rose, a leadership ballot was held. Morrison was viewed as a compromise candidate. He defeated both Peter Dutton and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to become the party leader. This victory automatically made him the prime minister.
