geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Scandinavian Peninsula is in Northern Europe.

Fennoscandia
Fennoscandia

It is the largest peninsula in Europe. It includes most of Sweden and Norway. It also includes the northwest part of Finland.

High mountains run through the land. The Scandinavian mountain range marks the border between Norway and Sweden. The highest peak is Galdhøpiggen in Norway. These mountains also hold a very large glacier. We call this glacier Jostedalsbreen.

Long ago, huge ice sheets covered this area. The heavy ice made the land sink. When the ice melted, the sea filled deep valleys. This created the famous fjords of Norway.

The land has many natural riches. People find iron, copper, and gold here. Sweden has much iron ore in the northwest. There is also oil and gas off the coast of Norway.

Many people live in the south. This is where the farmland is best. Large cities like Stockholm and Oslo are also in the south.
