Scalp

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The scalp is the area of your head where hair grows. It is part of a group of structures called the epicranium. This group covers your cranium, which is your skull. The scalp starts at your face in the front. It goes around the sides and the back to meet your neck.

Scientists who study the scalp and hair use a special word. They call this study trichology. Understanding the scalp helps us learn how our bodies protect our brains.

Your scalp is made of five different layers. You can remember them using the word SCALP. First is the skin, which holds hair follicles and oil glands. Second is connective tissue, a layer of fat and fibers. This layer holds your nerves and blood vessels.

Third is the aponeurosis, a tough layer of tissue. It acts like an anchor to hold the top layers in place. Fourth is loose connective tissue that feels like a gel. This allows the top layers to shift around. Finally, the fifth layer is the pericranium. This membrane sits on the skull and helps the bone stay healthy.

Many blood vessels bring blood to your scalp. There are five pairs of arteries that do this work. Some come from the internal carotid artery. Others come from the external carotid artery. Because these vessels are stuck tightly to the tissue, even a small cut can bleed a lot. The veins also help drain blood away. They follow similar paths back toward the neck.

Nerves also connect to your scalp so you can feel things. You can remember these nerves using the name Z-GLASS. This stands for the Zygomaticotemporal, Greater occipital, Lesser occipital, Auriculotemporal, Supratrochlear, and Supraorbital nerves. These nerves help you feel touch on your head. There are also muscles under the scalp. The frontalis muscle is in the front of your forehead. The occipitalis muscle is at the back of your head.

Many things can happen to the scalp during life. Some people have dandruff, which is when dead skin flakes off. Others might deal with head lice. There are also many types of skin growths called tumors. Doctors can even perform hair transplants. They use a person's own hair to help new hair grow. This is often done using a method called micro grafting. It helps make the results look very natural.
