Saul Alinsky was a man who helped people organize. He was born in Chicago in 1909. His parents moved to America from a place called Vilna. As a young man, he studied how people live in cities. He saw that many people in poor areas suffered. He wanted to change this.

In 1938, he began working to help communities. He helped neighbors work together to reach goals. He worked in the Back of the Yards area. There, he helped many different groups join as one. They asked leaders for better housing and fair treatment.

Alinsky started a group called the Industrial Areas Foundation. This group helped train local leaders. He did not want to lead the people himself. He wanted neighbors to lead their own lives.

One group he helped was in Woodlawn. This group gave Black residents a voice. They worked to change how their neighborhood grew.

Many people still talk about his ideas today. Some people use his ways to fight for change. Others disagree with his methods. He showed that people can find power when they act together.
