Long ago, he was a leader in a group called the Weather Underground. This group wanted to change the United States government. They used violence to try to reach their goals. They planted bombs in many public buildings. One bomb in a house exploded by mistake in 1970. This accident killed three people in the group. One of those people was Ayers's girlfriend, Diana Oughton.

Ayers had to hide from the law for many years. He was a fugitive during this time. He and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, lived in different places. They used new names to stay hidden. Later, the government dropped the charges against Ayers. This happened because FBI agents used illegal ways to find him.

After he was no longer hiding, Ayers became a teacher. He worked at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He was a very high-ranking professor there. He also wrote a book about his life called Fugitive Days. It tells his own memories of those wild years.
