His grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, was a writer and ran a printing press. Satyajit grew up surrounded by these machines and the process of making books. His father, Sukumar Ray, was a famous writer of nonsense rhymes and children's literature. Ray later studied Fine Art at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan. There, he studied under renowned Indian painters like Nandalal Bose and Benode Behari Mukherjee. These experiences helped him develop a deep appreciation for Oriental art and Indian visual traditions.

Before becoming a director, Ray worked as a commercial artist and illustrator.
