A satellite navigation device helps you find your exact location on Earth.

People often call these tools satnavs or GPS devices. They use systems called GNSS, which means global navigation satellite systems. These systems use groups of satellites orbiting high above us. By talking to these satellites, your device finds your coordinates. This helps you see your position on a map. It can even give you turn-by-turn directions to a new place.

To work well, a device must see at least four satellites at once.

The satellites send out very weak signals from high in space. These signals travel a long way to reach your device. Sometimes, the signals can be hard to catch. They might bounce off tall buildings in a city. This is called multipath propagation. Trees, tunnels, or thick buildings can also block the view. Some smart devices use cell towers to help find your spot faster. This special way of working is called assisted GNSS.

These tools grew out of the Cold War in the late 20th century.

At first, the US and Russia built these systems for military use. The US Navy used a system called Transit in 1960. Later, the US military planned the Global Positioning System, or GPS. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan opened GPS for civilian use. This happened after a tragic airplane error involving Korean Air Lines Flight 007. Since then, many countries have built their own systems. The European Union created Galileo, and China created BeiDou.

Many different companies have made these tools over the years.

In 1989, Magellan released the first handheld GPS receiver. These early units cost about US$2,900 each. In 1990, the Mazda Eunos Cosmo became the first car with built-in navigation. Other companies like Garmin and TomTom soon joined the market. Today, most people use the GPS chip inside their smartphones. These phones use apps like Google Maps or Waze to help travelers. This makes navigation much more common and affordable for everyone.

There are many ways to use these helpful tools today.

Some people use handheld devices for hiking or cycling. These tools are often rugged and can work in the rain. Others use mobile devices that stay in a car. Some devices are even built into cameras to tag photos. Even pilots use these systems to help fly planes safely. Whether you are in a car or on a trail, these satellites help guide your way. They turn a hard job into an easy one.
