In 1946, it became part of the modern Italian Republic. Today, the island is divided into six provinces and two metropolitan cities. Cagliari serves as the capital and the largest city. Sassari is the second largest urban center. As of 2025, the population exceeds 1.5 million people.
Sardinia is also a place of linguistic diversity. The indigenous Sardinian language is recognized by national law.
