French paleontologist Albert-Félix de Lapparent led expeditions in the Sahara from 1946 to 1959. These trips found skull fragments, teeth, and vertebrae. In 1964, a team found an almost complete skull in Niger. Later, an American scientist named Paul Sereno led new trips. He found many more fossils in 1997 and 2000. These new finds helped scientists understand the whole skeleton much better.

Interestingly, young Sarcosuchus had narrow snouts like a modern gharial. As they matured, their snouts became much broader. They also possessed a structure at the end of the snout called a bulla. This expansion is similar to the "ghara" found on male gharials. However, the bulla was found in all Sarcosuchus skulls discovered so far. This suggests the bulla was not a trait used to distinguish males from females.

Protection for Sarcosuchus came from bony plates called osteoderms, or dermal scutes.

These scutes formed an uninterrupted surface on the body. They began at the back of the neck and continued down to the middle of the tail. This skull became the official type specimen for the species in 1966. Later, American paleontologist Paul Sereno led major expeditions in 1997 and 2000. His team recovered 20 tons of fossils, including six new specimens. One of these specimens included about half of a complete skeleton. This helped scientists finally map out the full anatomy of the animal.

Most other pholidosaurids were specialized piscivores, which means they ate only fish. However, the broad snout of an adult Sarcosuchus suggests a different diet. Analysis of calcium isotopes provides specific evidence of what it ate. These studies show that fish made up about 58% of its diet. The remaining portion of its diet likely consisted of herbivorous dinosaurs. These included animals like Nigersaurus and Ouranosaurus that lived in the same environment. While it hunted big prey, a 2014 study suggested it might not have used the "death roll" maneuver used by modern crocodiles. This means it likely hunted and ate its prey differently than the crocodiles we see today.

The environment of Sarcosuchus was a humid, tropical freshwater system. It lived in an inland fluvial environment, which is a place shaped by rivers. This habitat was filled with many other prehistoric creatures. Sarcosuchus shared the water with large fish like the coelacanth Mawsonia. It lived alongside various dinosaurs, including the iguanodontian Lurdusaurus. Other predators in the area included spinosaurids like Suchomimus and large theropods. By studying the fossils found together, scientists can reconstruct the entire ecosystem. This helps us understand how Sarcosuchus fit into the complex web of life during the Early Cretaceous.
