It is the largest of Malaysia's 13 states. The land area is almost equal to the size of Peninsular Malaysia. Sarawak sits in northwest Borneo and shares borders with several neighbors. To the northeast, it meets the Malaysian state of Sabah. To the north, it is bordered by the country of Brunei. To the south, it touches Kalimantan, which is the Indonesian part of Borneo.

The state capital is Kuching. This city serves as the economic center and the seat of the state government. Other significant urban centers include Miri, Sibu, and Bintulu.

The geography of Sarawak is defined by an equatorial climate. This means the weather is warm and wet throughout the year. Such conditions support vast tropical rainforests filled with many plant and animal species.

The Rajang River is a massive feature and is the longest river in Malaysia. One of its tributaries is the Balui River, where the Bakun Dam is located. The Bakun Dam is one of the largest dams in Southeast Asia.

For those looking upward, Mount Murud is the highest point in the state. The landscape also features impressive cave systems at Gunung Mulu National Park.

Human history in Sarawak stretches back tens of thousands of years. The earliest known human settlement was found at the Niah Caves.

These caves show evidence of foragers living there 40,000 years ago. Scientists discovered a modern human skull there, which is the oldest in Malaysia. Archaeological sites like Santubong also reveal ancient connections. Excavations uncovered Chinese ceramics from the Tang and Song dynasties.

These items date from the 8th to the 13th century AD. They suggest that the area was an important seaport for international trade.

Political control of the region has shifted many times over the centuries. In the 16th century, the coastal regions were under the influence of the Bruneian Empire. Portuguese cartographers referred to the area as Cerava. A major turning point occurred in 1839 when a British explorer named James Brooke arrived.

After helping to restore order, Brooke was granted the governorship. He and his descendants ruled as the "White Rajahs" from 1841 to 1946. During World War II, the Japanese occupied the state for three years. Following the war, the last White Rajah, Charles Vyner Brooke, ceded the territory to Britain. In 1946, Sarawak became a British Crown Colony.

Sarawak eventually joined the federation of Malaysia. The British granted the state self-government on 22 July 1963.

Sarawak became one of the founding members of the new nation. This transition was not without conflict. Indonesia opposed the creation of Malaysia, leading to a three-year confrontation. Additionally, the formation of Malaysia prompted a communist insurgency that lasted until 1990. Today, the state is governed by a premier and a governor, also known as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. The government follows a system modeled on the Westminster parliamentary system.

The state is characterized by incredible cultural and religious diversity. Many different ethnic groups live in Sarawak, including the Iban, Chinese, Malay, Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu, Indian, Eurasian, and Kedayan.

While there is no official religion, Sarawak is the only Malaysian state with a Christian majority. English and Malay are used as the state languages. This diversity is reflected in the local traditions and arts. The state is nicknamed the "Land of the Hornbills" because of its many bird species.

The Rhinoceros hornbill is the official state bird. For the Dayak people, these birds are important cultural symbols representing the spirit of God.

Modern Sarawak relies on its rich natural resources for its economy. The state specializes in the export of oil and gas, timber, and palm oil.

It also has very strong sectors in manufacturing, energy, and tourism. Because of its unique history and legal status, Sarawak has more autonomy than other Malaysian states. This means it has more control over certain local matters under the Malaysian constitution. From the ancient foragers of the Niah Caves to the modern ports of Bintulu, Sarawak remains a vital part of the region.
