Sapporo is a major designated city located in Hokkaido, Japan.

It serves as the capital of both Hokkaido Prefecture and Ishikari Subprefecture. The city sits in the southwest of Hokkaido on the Ishikari Plain. It is built upon the alluvial fan of the Toyohira River. This river is a tributary of the larger Ishikari River. Sapporo is the largest city in Hokkaido and the largest north of Tokyo. As of July 31, 2023, the population was 1,959,750 people. This makes it the fifth-most populous city in all of Japan. It acts as the cultural, economic, and political center of the region.

The city's layout is very organized due to a specific grid plan. This plan uses streets that run at right angles to form blocks. The design was inspired by the ancient cities of Kyoto and Heijō-kyō.

A central feature is Odori Park, a long green space that bisects the city. The western and southern parts of Sapporo are defined by mountains. These include Mount Teine, Maruyama, and Mount Moiwa. Many rivers also flow through the area, such as the Sōsei River.

Sapporo's history began long before the modern city was built. The area was originally a plain inhabited by the indigenous Ainu people. During the Edo period, the land held a few trade posts for the Matsumae domain. The city officially began to grow in 1869 as an administrative center. This happened with the establishment of the Hokkaido Development Commission headquarters.

In 1866, construction started on a canal through the area. This encouraged early settlers to establish Sapporo village. The new Meiji government wanted a new capital on the Ishikari Plain. They felt the port of Hakodate was not suitable for defense or development. The plain offered flat, well-drained land, which is rare in mountainous Hokkaido.

Development in the late 1800s involved many international advisors. These experts were known as oyatoi gaikokujin.

Horace Capron, a US Secretary of Agriculture, served as a special advisor. Edwin Dun arrived in 1876 to establish sheep and cattle ranches. He also taught people how to raise pigs and make products like butter and cheese. William S. Clark also arrived in 1876 to help found the Sapporo Agricultural College. This college eventually became Hokkaido University.

The city grew so much that the Development Commission was abolished in 1882.

Sapporo is a world-famous destination for major sporting events. The city was chosen for the 1940 Winter Olympics, but the event was cancelled due to war. However, Sapporo successfully hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics. This was the first time the Winter Olympics were held in Asia.

Additionally, the city hosted the 1991 Winter Universiade. These events have helped make Sapporo a global name in sports.

The climate in Sapporo is characterized by a humid continental climate. This means there is a wide range of temperatures between seasons. Summers are warm and humid but not oppressively hot. Winters are cold and very snowy. The city receives an average of 500 centimeters of snowfall per year.

This heavy snow is caused by the Siberian High and the Aleutian Low. This weather allows the city to hold the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. This festival attracts more than 2 million tourists every year.

Today, Sapporo is a modern hub with many important landmarks. Visitors can explore the Sapporo Beer Museum or the Sapporo TV Tower.
