This island sits in the southeast corner of the group. It is the southernmost island in the entire Azores archipelago. You can find it sitting south of the island of São Miguel. The island has an oblong shape that stretches from the northwest to the southeast. Visitors often come to see its white sand beaches and warm, dry weather.

The island was formed a very long time ago by volcanoes.

It is the oldest island in the Azores group. Some of its rock formations are 8.12 million years old. These rocks were made during a time called the Miocene. Volcanic activity continued for a long time until about 2 million years ago. This activity included both underwater and land eruptions. Today, you can still see the results, like the tall basalt columns at Ribeira do Maloás.

Portuguese sailors first found the island many years ago. In 1427, a navigator named Diogo de Silves found it while traveling to Madeira. Some stories say the name "Santa Maria" came from a lookout on a ship. The crew was celebrating a feast day for the Virgin Mary when they saw it.

Later, Gonçalo Velho Cabral was officially named the leader of the discovery. He arrived in 1439 with colonists and cattle to start living there. They built towns like Vila do Porto on the southwest coast.

Life on the island was not always easy for the people living there. Because it sits in the ocean, many pirates and privateers attacked it.

In 1480, people had to throw rocks from cliffs to defend themselves. Even Christopher Columbus had to land there during a storm in 1493. His crew was even captured by the local residents for a short time. To stay safe, the people built strong forts along the coast. These forts helped protect the towns from many different groups of invaders.

Today, Santa Maria is known for its unique look and nature. You can explore green areas like the Fontinhas forest reserve.

There are also interesting places like the Poço da Pedreira. The island has a mix of history and natural beauty. It connects the old stories of explorers to the modern world. Even the local food, like "Ear Cookies," tells a story of the island.
